Ida Lilian Koch (nee March)
March 10, 1930 – August 9, 2016

It is with both sorrow and joy that we announce the passing of Ida on August 9th, 2016 at the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. Sorrow, in that in her latter days she had experienced much discomfort which is now happily behind her, and joy in that she has now gone on to a better place to be with her Lord and Saviour.

Ida was born in Brownsdale TB, NL, the eldest of six children born to Walter and Emma March, who lived their lifetimes in that small Nfld out port community. She is survived by sisters Floss Thorne of Sherwood Park, AB; Ruby VanNest (Donald) of Flemington, NJ; Margaret Hassinger (Richard) of Edensburg, PA, and Becca Delgado (Carl) of Jonesboro, GA, and brothers Ben (Linda) and Ed (Betty) both of Brownsdale TB, NL. Cherished wife of Kenneth (retired S/Sgt RCMP) of Ottawa. Loving mother of son Terry (Mary) and daughter Tracey. Proud grandmother of Kristal (Matt) and Ken Jr, and great-grandmother of Anthony (6), Tristan (3) and Taelass (1), all of Ottawa.

Shortly after graduating from High School at Brownsdale, Ida enrolled in the St. John’s General Hospital School of Nursing, and following graduation in 1952, she was accepted in a staff nursing position at the Newfoundland Hospital for Mental and Nervous Diseases, St. John’s. In 1964 Ida was promoted to Associate Director of Nursing, a position she held until she unselfishly resigned in 1965 to devote full time to raising and nurturing the two young additions to her family.

In 1967 the Koch’s were transferred to Ottawa by the RCMP where they invested in their first home, in which they still reside. Ida was diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s 20 years ago. As the years passed and her symptoms became more pronounced and problematic, she was permanently admitted to the Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre about six years ago, at which place she was called home to be with her Lord.

Ida was a committed Christian and held many congregational positions during her life such as an organist and choir director in her home church in Brownsdale, at Trinity Lutheran in St. John’s and of special note, she served in the position of Financial Secretary at All Saints Lutheran in Ottawa for 32 years.

During Ken’s service in the Force and in their retirement, Ida and Ken made it a priority during their extensive North American travels by car to visit Provincial, State and National capitols that were on their routes, missing in total only six US capitol buildings.

To the magnitude who befriended Ida over the years, we express our sincere thanks. A word of appreciation to those of you who have been more than friends, and who have helped us unselfishly in Ida’s difficult walk with Alzheimer’s in recent years. Your prayers on her and her family’s behalf have done much to strengthen us. We would be remiss not to recognize the staff and volunteers at the Perley Day Away Program, which she so enjoyed, prior to her admission to the Perley. For the past six years Ida was a full-time resident at the Perley, and it seems a simple thanks to the staff throughout the Perley and especially in G1S, who went out of their way to befriend her and provide for her every need with tender loving care, to be somehow inadequate.

Ida’s visitation will take place at All Saints Lutheran Church, 1061 Pinecrest Rd (at the Queensway), on Monday, August 15th, 2016 after 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. A reception will be held downstairs following the service. A burial, for family only, will take place at Capital Memorial Gardens. For those wishing, donations to The Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre are appreciated.
