In loving memory of
John Valic,
91 years

Wednesday morning, November 30th, 2016 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, Ottawa. In the modest setting of the small village of Trg, Croatia, John was born to Mirko and Dragica Valic on April 16th, 1925. He immigrated to Canada and settled in the mining city of Sudbury, Ontario at the age of twelve with his parents and his brother Steve (predeceased) (wife, Jean). In 1958 he met his beloved wife Anka (Boljkovac) and began building his hotel business. Loving father of Walter (wife Marija Kljajic) of Sudbury, and Linda (husband Steven Mills) of Ottawa, who both learned and inherited his hard work ethic and musical gifts. He loved singing in the choir at Sveti Marko Croatian Catholic Church in Sudbury and spent his retirement years playing the accordion, organ, building home-made tamburitzas and writing music. He was most proud of and will be missed by his two beautiful granddaughters, Martina and Stephanie. He will be remembered by many cousins, nephews, nieces and Kumovi in Sudbury, Garson, Toronto, United States, Austria and Croatia. John faced his medical challenges with great strength and dignity. The family wishes to thank the scores of doctors, nurses, technicians, personal support workers and the many loving hands that helped John daily. Special thanks to the staff of Valley Stream Retirement Community and to the C3 compassionate professionals at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. Recently, only his infectious smile could communicate his gratitude. To all that he met in his journeys on this earth, let this be an opportunity for John to wish his trademark “Thank you. God bless you.” upon all he has known.

Friends may pay respects at the
Kelly Funeral Home, Walkley Chapel
1255 Walkley Road, Ottawa, ON K1V 6P9
613-731-1255
Sunday, December 4th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 5th at the Sveti Leopold Mandic Croatian Catholic Church, 170 Hinchey Avenue, Ottawa, at 11 a.m. Interment at the Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation (Ottawa), the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (Civic Campus) or to the Health Sciences North (Sudbury) are appreciated.
